I, like many people have been eating mindlessly when it comes to food. For example, reaching down into the bag for another chip and another while watching TV. As I’ve employed mindfulness in other aspects of my life, in order to achieve balance, I’m trying to incorporate mindfulness in my relation to food. This blog is not about “how to lose weight” or “how to diet mindfully.” Rather, it’s following the progress of my mindful eating journey.
Lately, mindfulness has become a buzz word. Its actual definition is “Mindfulness is deliberately paying attention, being fully aware of what is happening both inside yourself – in your body heart, and mind – and outside yourself in your environment. Mindfulness is awareness without judgement or criticism.” I came across this practice a year ago, through the work of Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn, particularly in the area of coping with depression and anxiety.
How we conduct our lives, including eating, definitely has a bearing on stress, illness and pain in our lives. If we eat food that are not nourishing or we eat more than the body needs, health problems will sooner or later catch up with us.
Because I love cooking, I already have an awareness of how to engage my senses in cooking and tasting. It’s the eating part that trips me up a lot! In Googling “mindful eating,” I came across Dr. Jan Chozen Bay’s Mindful Eating: A Guide to Rediscovering a Healthy and Joyful Relationship with Food from which I draw heavily. There’s an axiom that in order to unlearn bad habits, you have to replace them with good ones. This is what I’m striving to achieve in my daily posts.
